What a narrow world
You’ve backed yourself into.
You couldn’t seem to find a door
That you could walk
Forward through.
All the running and the lies
Kept you much too tired to try
To smile into
The mirror that
Reflected on your soul.
We were all exhausted
From the chase to prove you’re worth it
Yet we couldn’t let you sink
And hope you’d swim.
Only since you’re standing still
Are we allowed to know you
And you don’t push us away
Because “alone” no longer feels good.
Standing still was hard for you
So we stood still beside you
Discovering in the stillness
The things that made you run.
Some of them were fears
Creating too much noise within you.
But some were ours
Wrapped up and packaged
Tightly over years.
It’s all so much nothing
Comparing it to life
A blink, a dream,
A flash, it seems
We’ve all awakened
Just before the crash.
You’ve backed yourself into.
You couldn’t seem to find a door
That you could walk
Forward through.
All the running and the lies
Kept you much too tired to try
To smile into
The mirror that
Reflected on your soul.
We were all exhausted
From the chase to prove you’re worth it
Yet we couldn’t let you sink
And hope you’d swim.
Only since you’re standing still
Are we allowed to know you
And you don’t push us away
Because “alone” no longer feels good.
Standing still was hard for you
So we stood still beside you
Discovering in the stillness
The things that made you run.

But some were ours
